Model 1100 History

The evolution of this shotgun started with the design of the Remington model 11-48, then the Model 58s and the 878s.

The original version of the Remington 1100 shotgun came out only in the 12 gauge in 1963, followed by the 16 gauge and 20 gauge in 1964, and finally the .410 gauge Remington 1100 in 1969. In 1970 a matched set came out in .410 gauge and 28 gauge.

I just recently purchased a Remington 1100 shotgun that has a serial number on the receiver that is 'L79xxxxV'. I'm trying to figure out when it was made and from what I read on a site it stated the first letter would be the month and then the first two numbers would be the year (so mine would be Feb 1979?!?). Dec 11, 2011 Model 1100 serial numbers (on the receiver) started with the number 1001. All but the early guns also have a prefix letter. All Model 1100 Remington shotguns were serial numbered in blocks of numbers. Each serial number has a suffix and the following indicates the meaning: V = 12ga.
